While Livonia is known today as a thriving suburban and commercial center, its roots are firmly planted in agriculture.
For more than a century, the area focused on sheep raising, dairy farming, and grain cultivation. This period became known as the “Gilt Edge” era, reflecting the community’s agricultural success and hardworking spirit.
In the late 1890s, a small community known as Gilt Edge developed around a major local cheese factory. The area’s agricultural prominence attracted statewide attention, and in 1901, Michigan Governor Fred Warner purchased the operation, further cementing the region’s importance in Michigan’s agricultural history.

One of Livonia’s most treasured landmarks is the historic Wilson Barn. Originally built in 1888, the barn was destroyed by fire and later rebuilt in 1919.
